Gold Standard Outcomes
Based on the 7 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) against traditional monopolar TURP, the PK TURP delivers Gold Standard outcomes in terms of changes in all the major endpoints. See Table 1.

Table 1: Primary Outcomes of PK TURP vs Monopolar TURP
PK TURP gives reduced tissue trauma…

Figure 1 Minimal tissue trauma with PK TURP due to lower voltage
the ability to achieve concomitant hemostasis during resection enabled a reduction to be shown in blood loss (Figure 2).

Figure 2 Intra-operative blood loss in PK TURP
…reduced physiological change,
PK TURP patients experienced lower drops in Hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) (Figure 3).

Figure 3 Hemoglobin & hematocrit change in PK TURP
…reduced continuous bladder irrigation (CBI),
With more effective hemostasis there was less requirement for CBI (Figure 4).

Figure 4 Continuous bladder irrigation in PK TURP
…reduced length of stay (LOS) and catheterization time,
Despite use of pre-determined protocols for removal of catheter and LOS, both these parameters showed at least one-day reduction when PK TURP is performed. The literature indicates that day case protocols are increasingly being implemented for up to 85–95% 15,33,34,49 of patients with PK TURP.
The effect of this less-traumatic PK TURP technique is a reduction in patient complications. TUR syndrome was proven to occur in 1.9% cases in monopolar TURP compared to no cases reported with PK TURP (p<0.001).

Figure 5 Elimination of TUR Syndrome in PK TURP
Overall patient complication rates were significantly lower for PK TURP (11.0%) compared to monopolar TURP (18.3%) (p<0.001) (Figure 6).
